The locavore's dilemma

The locavore's dilemma: in praise of the 10,000-mile diet by Pierre Desrochers & Hiroko Shimizu 256 pgs.

The local food movement has made a series of claims about the idea that we would all be better off if more of our food came from local sources.  They appeal to our feelings about farmers, neighbors, and health.  Unfortunately, they don't do a very good job with the facts.  Desrochers and Shimizu have done a great job of explaining the global food market.  They have gotten all crazy looking at FACTS and studies and the history.  They make many points about basic economics that are difficult to dispute.  They opened my eyes to how easy it is for "warm and fuzzy" ideas can worm their way into the way we think.  Excellent reading for those interested in economics, food, and facts.
